Hey all!
I'm an American that has recently returned from a 9 month stay in Australia (6 months in Sydney, 3 months traveling). I worked for over 3 months while in Sydney and want to get my tax back. I have started the process on the ATO (Aus. taxation office) website and am about to submit my information, but it makes me a bit nervous as there is no spot for me to enter my American bank account information or American address. If I am to get my tax back, how am I to know if the return will get to my bank here in the US? It appears I am owed about $1100 AUD and I would love to have that money in my account! Any insight would be most helpful. Thank you!
Hi there, Australian tax back can indeed be done through the ATOs system- but it can be a minefield to get through.
Many people accidentally owe money when they try to do it themselves and your correct the bank detials section is a bit confusing...my recommendation would be to contact a company who specialises in backpakcer type tax returns and get a professionals help.
