I'm Canadian, youth, I bought a one-way ticket from Toronto to Berlin online (for about $500). I'm planning on staying in Europe for about 2 months before moving on. I thought that I should just continue buying one-way tickets since I don't know where I'm going after that. Then I kept on reading that rtw tickets are cheaper and I panicked thinking that I should've bought a rtw ticket starting from Toronto (although I read that buying a rtw starting from London is cheapest)!!!
I don't think RTW ticket would be the best option for you. It seems to me that you would like to fly only if necessary to get from A to B and you would do most of the trip overland.
You could to a "circle" to Africa from Europe and then travel onto the Middle East. From the ME, you could travel up north the Caucasian countries up or even through Central Asia to Russia. Remember, you can start taking the transiberian railway from "any" part of Russia (not only from Moscow).
I would just work it out as you go and don't worry too much about the necessity of airplane tickets.

If you like the idea of overland travel you could link the train from Berlin to Russia and take the train to China, I think it takes 14 days and you can stop off at different places on the route, you'll of course need to organize Visas. Check out where you can but these on route.

If you would like to travel in Africa I would recommend group traveling, there are plenty of companies who do this type of travel, you will have a leader and driver, tents for accommodation. We came back this last January and it was great visiting all the National Parks and see all the amazing animals on the way. You will be safe in a group and have a safe to keep all you private things in.
America Canada NZ and OZ are easy to travel in, lots of hostels where you can meet people. Do your research though and I would always recommend you have a place to stay after a long flight. You could wing the rest if you want.
Southern China is a challenge because of the language but the people are wonderful and love to help when they can. The tourist areas are easier to travel in.
Asia, Vietnam is easy with everything set up for the tourist. There are buses which travel along the coastline in Vietnam, you can connect with Thailand & Cambodia and into China if you wanted. You can get the China Visa in Vietnam or Thailand but it is only for 30 days from date of issue.
India has trains to almost every part of the country, 1st 2nd and 3rd class. You would need to book well in advance from the station book AC. 3rd class non AC is not good so avoid if you can. Don't by tickets from the agents they tend to charge a considerable amount more than the cost of the ticket.
When you do the budgeting don't forget to add on inoculations, malaria tablets if you need them (they can be very expensive)cost of Visas, insurance.
Any medication you need, have a doctors letter to say why you are carrying large amounts if you say have a years worth.
We bought round the world tickets and added domestic and an additional international flight. Contrary to what people say we didn't find Asia a cheap place to buy air tickets and I shopped around.
Whatever you buy whether it is accommodation, flights, any transport ask for discounts you will be surprised how much you can save.
Money, have two credit cards and two debit cards, (a card can stop working for no reason it's happened to me)never keep them all together, wear trousers with zipped pockets, use a body belt, you can never be too careful. Never carry too much cash, use ATM, although this can be difficult in areas outside cities in Africa.
