April is gorgeous on the southern half of the South Island, as autumn will be in full swing there. Whatever you do, definitely get out of the cities; New Zealand is all about nature!
In a week, I'd do a loop Christchurch - Lake Tekapo - Queenstown - Franz Josef glacier - Christchurch, spending 1-2 days in each place. (Obviouslly you could start/end that loop in Queenstown as well, but Christchurch has more flights.) You'll be passing through some of the most gorgeous and diverse landscapes New Zealand has to offer, centering around the Southern Alps: The MacKenzie plain with its stunningly blue lakes, Lindis Pass, Kawarau Gorge, Haast Pass, the wild west coast and the rainforests around the glaciers. This loop can be done both by rental car or by public transport, though the Franz Josef Glacier to Christchurch stretch takes a long time by public transport (first a bus to Greymouth, then the connecting TranzAlpine train to Christchurch).
