You really can do it all yourself. Having done so myself twice (first in New Zealand, then in Australia) back in 2003/2004 as a completely inexperienced traveller, I can tell you it's perfectly easy, and I'm pretty certain that the vast majority of backpackers indeed do it all themselves (three years ago, the entire concept of arrival packages didn't even exist; it was just ozintro, and that was so expensive most people skipped it).

Yeah, i've had a lot of experience travelling on my own but i always knew someone on the other end which is what worries me! But i'm so glad i found this site because now i see i'm not alone :D
I've actually just booked this package today, i'm going alone on 10th march and it looks great to me, and a good price considering all the activities and accommodation included, but obviously i cant be of much help, as i'm yet to experience it.

I like the idea of not having to worry about anything as you get there and it just being sorted.
