I am going on a trip to switzerland and I am having a hard time with google. I the Euro a universal currency in Europe? If not why????
It's not a universal currency, though it is used in most European countries (but not in Switzerland).
Different European nations all had their own currency. Many of those European countries which have united within the European Union (that also excludes Switzerland) agreed back in the 80s/90s that a common currency would be a good idea, and slowly moved toward it. Some countries had political parties or sentiments which were too strongly nationalistic, and didn't want to give up their "own" currency, so didn't actually introduce the Euro. They might yet in time. Other EU countries haven't been EU members for very long yet, and are still establishing the financial regime necessary to be allowed to introduce the Euro. (Estonia was the last country to introduce the Euro, only two years ago iirc.)

lelindaedwards: Be aware that holiday in Switzerland will now cost an arm and a leg compared to earlier years.
Thanks to the Euro crisis, every investor and its dog is seeking refuge in Swiss currency, driving up the exchange rate to figures that are completely detached from the real value (i.e. purchasing power) of the currency.
