I just checked on the bucket airline of Asia and you can get a flight from Chiang Mi to Phuket for $53 at the end of March.
Based on that maybe a good plan would be take the over night sleeper train From Bangkok to Chiang Mi. The train is clean and efficient and a really fun journey. They make the beds up for you at night and you wake arriving in Chiang Mi. It's about $50 for a sleeper.
Spend a couple of days looking at the sights of Chiang Mi, maybe an elephant safari. Chiang Mi is a great place to ride a scooter if you have some biking experience. Then take a bus, or if you feel confident rent a scooter and head up to Pia, a really laid back hill town with a great vibe and even some funky Thai reggae bands, then bus back to Chiang Mi, flight to Phuket. From Phuket you can take any number of ferries across the gulf to either Krabi or Phi Phi and any number of beaches.
