I am a 20 year old, female student from California and looking to intensively learn conversational Spanish abroad (do not care to learn to read/write - only conversational) for up to 2 months starting from March to May.
To help out our members with how to answer your questions, what exactly is California/USA Spanish versus Central/South American Spanish? Yes, there are some differences in accent, etc. in every country, but you'll be hard-pressed to learn Americanized Spanish in South America. Most of the Spanish-speaking people here are originally from Spanish-speaking countries. Skip Brazil since they speak Portuguese.
I recommend doing a search on TP for Spanish lesson schools. There are a plethora of threads asking the same question and tons of replies.
With no 'snarkiness' intended, I think most language schools - if they are not online or CD courses - will also include being able to read the written word. I may be wrong and I'm sure someone will correct me if I am.
If you only want conversational Spanish, then maybe consider a private tutor. In Panama, an acquaintance received private Spanish lessons plus room/board in the tutor's home for the same cost as a school would have charged him. The tutor was an MD by profession and supplemented his income by giving Spanish lessons.
