I didn't do much travelling there but cannot recall seeing any campervans. People use cars and often old ones outside of towns.
A TV travel programme showed a couple who had bought one in Peru and it broke down just a few days out, had to be paid to be towed, cost a fortune to repair while they had to stay at a local hotel while the parts were sent for and so on.
Also campervans are notoriously bad on fuel consumption.
There is also insurance. If you buy it in one SA country, it is often only valid in that country.
I have one but it is in uruguay, where you get a one year permission.
