Thanks cyberia. So where would I cross the border? Mae sae? And approx how long would it take to get to Rangoon in a taxi please?
Check with a local travel agency in Chiang Mai. They used to have tours to the Golden Triangle area. During the stop at Chiang Rai tourists used to cross over the border, get stamped out of Thailand, stamped in and out of Myanmar and then back into Thailand. If you had qualified for the free 30 day visa exemption, this way you can get another 15 days.
I haven't been to Chiang Mai for maybe 5 years so check with Chiang Mai travel agencies first to see if you can still do this. Got to be cheaper than flying to Myanmar and back to Chiang Mai.
If you need more than 15 days then you must fly back to Thailand from a different country or get a tourist visa. If you need a tourist visa from an embassy, and intend to fly, I would choose Malaysia, Cambodia or Laos myself. Less bother getting in and out.

Your cheapest option is to take the Green VIP bus from CM Arcade bus station up to Mae Sai bus station then a red baht bus in to town. Walk to the border and go through immigration etc. I believe the rule that you must return to Thailand within 24 hours is still enforced. As stated you will only receive a 15 day visa when you return to Thailand.
A slightly dearer option is to book on one of the visa-run minivans. This option takes you right to the border and you return same day.
Again, as stated, if you want a 30 day visa you will have to re-enter via air. So I guess Luang Prabang in Laos would be your cheapest option. All depends on return flights and what is the cheapest out of CM.
