My problem with this would be: "What if I do not wake up and I miss my flight?"
I would have some hours sleep the night before and leave for the airport near midnight and stay there (with food and drink) till my flight was due.
Take an alarm clock that will wake you up, and ask for a wake up call from the desk staff.
If your budget can stand it, you might consider staying your last night in the Sofitel at the airport: a 200 yard walk to checkin.
X95 express bus from Syntagma Square runs 24/7 every 30 mins, takes about an hour. There are a few backpackers listed on the accommodations section of Travellerspoint that are walking distance to Syntagma Sq.
Your backpackers will normally look after your bags the day you check out. Then you can go hang out, pick them back up at night and go jump on the bus straight to the airport for your flight.
