One-way fees rental car Sydney Cairns

Utrecht has indicated that this thread is about Australia

I tend to use (a meta search engine) for renting cars in Australia, and that shows full prices, including one-way fees. Pricing a three week trip in September, I see a price breakdown including one way fees (under three different names for four different companies) ranging from AUD $115 to $145. (The fifth company doesn't provide a price breakdown.)

Three things:

1. I suggest taking a bus, that way you don't spend all of your daylight driving.

2. If you do drive, get a car with bull bars on it, so that you can drive at night. Which leads to...

3. Be prepared to kill a few kangaroo. Especially if you go off the main roads.

I only drove in a few areas with other people's cars, but there was one week when I hit 3 kangaroos. but we had a truck with bull bars so the truck didn't get wrecked. At that time we were only driving an hour and a half a day.

Why would you go such a long way around trying to find this information? Just email a few of the rental companies and ask how much they charge.

You could also look into you can get a car that needs to be returned to say Cairns from Sydney for free, then a small fee for days you add on.

Thanks for the answer(s), although basically Sander really answered it

Dodger, I did that already but got a. again general answers of brokers or companies or b. no answer at all.
There are a few brokers who give prices including drop off costs, and some say you can cancel if you don't like the one-way fees....but they give it after you made the booking, because only then they can give the fees!

Cool Paul, I drove before and believe me: there is really no other mode of transport I would like to use. I like to stop where I want and drive wherever I want. And I don't like driving at night because I would miss a lot in my opinion. Guess we aren't all keen on driving or the travelling itself...

its also who you know in the industry i work in travel in australia i sometimes i can get the 1 way fees dropped as i do alot of camper and car rentals.

Hello,

I would definitely recommend trying relocation vehicles - no way way fee and cheap as chips as far as costs go i.e. petrol allowance. Although my experience with this process it can be either difficult to get the drop off and pick up location you want - and also you get a km allowance that does not really allow you to drive any further than straight down the road you would take to get from one to the other. And there is always the time limit you can extend but not beyond an extra couple of days etc....

Or you could buy a cheap backpacker car/van that a lot of people do in Oz...but that obviously depends on you. How long you will be there/weighing up the costs.

Or if you do an online quote with each individual car hire company the one way fee is included in the total price for said quote. Yeah it can be annoying and somewhat time consuming to go to each car hire company website but using a general website that does all the legwork for you as suggested above can incur additional fees. The service is not free...

The cheapest one I know of in Sydney is No Birds. I know a lot of people looking for budget car hire use them - or did - I have no idea of the costs at present but it should not be too difficult to find out.

Cheers and enjoy Oz
