Prices start at under $6.

Although the hostel sites list places in Hoi An and Danang, I don't believe there are any real "pay by bunk" hostels there - just small inexpensive hotels. I've stayed in both the Nhi Trung and Dai Long Hotels and would again (I paid $15. in '09).

Read the fine print at the hostel sites - very deceptive!

As Daawgon says, there aren't really any backpacker-friendly places or hostels as such (at least there wasn't when I was there) but prices in the little hotels should be reasonable. We stayed at the Thien Thanh hotel for around $10 per night and it was gorgeous. Breakfast was served outside on the deck with a pretty view and the staff were lovely.

Have you left on your trip yet?

(edit) you have to remember that the hostel sites are charging these guesthouses for using their site. $2 or $3 per booking is nothing for some hostel site owner sitting in California..um or Holland, sorry sam, but to the guesthouse owner in Vietnam it's a huge amount. So if you turn up on their door, there is always a better price to be had.

I rarely pre book anywhere unless I know its going to be really difficult to get accommodations. This way I can not only look at the place before I decide, (photo's and descriptions on booking sites are often a little misleading) but on the journey to the town by bus, train or whatever, you will usually meet other travelers, sometimes singles that also would like to share accommodations.

The problem with traveling alone is you pay the same price for a room that two people pay, so if you find someone traveling alone, and there are plenty of them, they are usually thinking the same thing as you, "damn I wish I could halve my accommodation costs by sharing a room!" It's a great way to meet people and it will make your dollars go further.

One time at band camp, no wait that's another story! But one time we had 5 people that had started out single and all joined up to get better room rates, even the odd one out could get a cheaper rate because we would negotiate for 3 rooms. "you want to fill 3 rooms at half price, or no rooms and nothing" If you negotiate in a friendly way, it can be a lot of fun. They have much more respect for you and really become more friendly. They think you are an idiot rich tourist if you just walk in and pay the going rate.

Thanks so much for all your replies! I am heading to Hoi-An tonight, sitting in Nha Thrang for the moment. I will try waiting and checking once I get there.

Cam-On! As the Vietnamese would say!

Cheers,

Sheila
