Australia is very big so it can be best to take some flight, like Perth on the west coast to the east coast. Flights are cheapest booked before arrival and as early as possible.
I found a few days in Perth enough.
If you hire a vehicle and do not drop it off where you pick it up, you pay have to pay a big one way charge. You can travel about by public transport and hire a car for "local travel".
A camper van is expensive, uses lots of fuel and can be difficult to use in towns. You cannot just park (for free) by any road side but often must use trailer parks and the like (where they will often have good showers and electricity).
Car hire is expensive but it does allow you to stop at cheap B&B's, guest houses and the like outside towns, particularly in New Zealand.
If you fire a car in NZ, normally you can drop it off at a depot on one island take the ferry across as a foot passenger and pick another car up on the other island without incurring any penalty charge.
Such a journey is very easy to do on your own.

How much you need depends on what kind of lifestyle you want though having said that, neither country is cheap and the £ exchange rate has been going down for years. For 3 months, I'd like at least £6,000 for what you plan, and a good bit more if you want regular nights out, restaurant food, etc. I am happy to eat on the road. Garages in NZ have a very good selection of hot pies, and don't forget fish and chips which seems to be a bit of a national dish there.
You could prebook some accommodation. Hostelbookers have some hotels at not too bad prices.
Flights, try kayak.
If you're travelling alone in New Zealand, hop-on hop-off bus (as you said Stray bus) is the cheaper and better alternative compared to renting a car or campervan. You'll get to save and meet a lot of travellers. I've been with Stray bus before, and I can say it's a mix of sightseeing and adventure activities. You'll also can pre-book accomodation through the bus driver. During the night you can have meals together or a drink or two if you can find companies in the bus

i am 21 and am hopeing to do the exact same i am saving my pennies at the moment but am aiming at going to australia around jan/feb 2013.

when are you looking at booking your flights- have booked mine now and dates are just a little differnt from what i had origianlly put in first post. leaving oz on 27th march now not 23rd- all other dates are pretty much same give or take a day.
would be great to meet up if dates work out the same
