Summer is getting unbearable. To take a much needed break I'm going on a San Diego beach vacation. The last good vacation I had was in 2010 when I had gone to Egypt. Long time! Finally this year, I will be leaving for San Diego. Have heard from my friends that San Diego beaches are superb. Top priority on my list is to visit the Mission Beach and try sailing and scuba diving there. (Hope I get good trainers there. Fingers crossed!) Another beach which I like to visit is La Jolla Cove and check out its abundant undersea life. I will be there for almost a week. And my only plan is to laze around the beaches. I have booked my accommodation at a hotel from where most of the beaches are nearby. I am just waiting to dive, swim, lie on sand, enjoy the unending sun and have fun! I would like to know if there is anything I must carry or any other San Diego beach I can visit. Would love to get some suggestions.
The beaches more or less run together - La Jolla on the top (north), next Pacific Beach (where most of the action is), then Mission and Ocean beaches and Coronado Island. If I were you, I'd rent a bike so you can see it all - don't miss Mission Bay too (Sea World). The Zoo is not that far away in Balboa Park. Normally, I would suggest Tijuana too, but these days it might be safer to stay in SD. It will be crowded since you're not the only beach lover. Parking can be hell in the summer and so is traffic on the freeways.
Central SD is really pretty small - the airport is close enough to touch the highrises - you should opt for a window seat if you're flying in. I once walked from Balboa Park to the airport. I hope you like Mexican food?

If you like golf, play the incredible Torrey Pines course that overlooks the ocean. It's in La Jolla, just on the north edge of San Diego. Tiger Woods' last win of a major tournament was on Torrey Pines' South Course back in 2008 (the US Open). It's a municipal course and thus open to anyone who can afford the green fees. Three out of the last five US Opens have been in California (Torrey Pines in San Diego in 2008, Pebble Beach in Carmel in 2010, and Olympic in San Francisco this year (2012))
P.S. I notice that Tiger Woods won the Congressional Golf Tournament in Washington, D.C. today and is now in second place alone behind Sam Snead for most golf tournament wins (he was tied with Jack Nicklaus for second).

Thanks Daawgon for replying. I loved your idea, I would definitely rent a bike. It would be easier to commute then. Mission Bay and Sea World are definitely on my itinerary. Yeah you are right, it would be crowded during this time of the year at the beaches but it is okay. My hotel is near to the beaches, so I hope it will be easier for me.

I think if you like you can go to Balboa Park has 16+ museums,eight gardens and the most beautiful Spanish architecture. and Seaworld which has the World Famous Shamu show. Pets Rule is a fantastic show. Actors are dogs, cats, pig, ducks, birds it's really funny.
Renting a bike and biking along the coast is so fun and relaxing! The San Diego Zoo and Sea World are way fun to see as well
Another fun place is the Del Mar Race Course. "Where the Surf Meets the Turf", which features thoroughbred horse racing.
Coronado is also interesting--it is south of town and has a gigantic hotel, "The Hotel Coronado" that both features lots of beach volleyball;--and which, just south of it has a spot where the Navy Seals practice their beach assault training (don't get too close, because they take their jobs seriously).
Hey Christina123. I did go to Balboa Park. It is so beautiful. Balboa Park is a gem which lets you experience marvelous art, architecture and culture. Loved the gardens there.
Hey VRTravel. Absolutely right. I loved biking there. It was so much fun. I had a great time. Want to go there again.

Hey Calcruzer. I couldn't visit Del Mar Race Course. May be next time. I had stayed at California Suites Hotel. Most of the beaches & other attractions were near to this hotel. Thanks for the suggestion anyway. May be next time when I go to San Diego, I will stay at Hotel Coronado.
