We have travelled every year to Europe since 2001, but never in late November to December and we are planning to do that this year. Ulthough, we have wanted to visit the Christmas Markets and just enjoy that time of year in Europe, we were always afraid of driving and would like to know if there is snow on the ground in those places during that time. I am nervous of us driving with those type of conditions. We could take trains but we like the convenience of a car to keep our "stuff" in. Can anyone tell us of the road conditions and snow during the time we will be over there? Thank you!
Two years ago winter was very bad in northern Europe with snow in November but last year it was not too bad. There is no way of knowing how bad it will be.
In normal winter conditions, roads do get cleared and sanded but you should drive according to the conditions of the road, which can be very slow if there is black ice about.
Keep your plans fluid and if there is bad snow blocking the roads where you want to go, park your car and take a train or plane there for a day or two and then return.
Can you be just a little more specific - Europe encompasses quite a large plot of real estate. You might like a car, but the train is so much more fun in my opinion. I was there in Feb once and it was fine in Southern Italy, but I was very cold when I got off the train in Munich (they don't heat those stations). Only God can predict weather so far ahead of time!
Just make sure you get a front wheel drive that runs on Deisel. Much cheaper, better mileage and running a Turbo for plenty of power. Get a set of chains and hit the road.
I like Europe in the fall winter the best. No crowds lower prices great hotel deals. I love pictures of big or small citIes towns. With barren trees, usually great lighting, soft and constant.
