How do I change a date on an existing booking? I emailed hotel and they said they couldn't do it and referred me back to the booking website?

This is definitely something that the hotel should do. If the number of nights are the same, and the rates are the same and there is availability, there's no reason they shouldn't be able to. If you booked through a website, then you must make any changes through them. Though it will probably cost them nothing to change a booking, they may charge you.

I'm sorry, but that's not accurate. Changes to bookings made on here and other sites like Hostelworld, Hostelbookers, etc. need to be made with the hotel and not with the website. I'm sure there are other websites where you can make the change through the site, but that's not the case in this situation.
