Hi all,
I always check a currency exchange site to get a handle on another country's currency. This helps when researching accom sites, food/drinks, places to visit with entry fees, transport costs etc. All the information is available on the internet. Then you can work out how much you need for each country depending on how long you stay. I carry a credit card as a backup.
Indonesia is slightly cheaper than those countries i may say.. if you need more info about anything with Indonesia let me know.. i've been to thailand and malaysia, can you be more specific with what you want to know?
It really depends what you want to do.
If you and your friends fancy a week or two volunteering within each country then maybe looking into a specialist company. I think that www.gapguru.com are pretty good. I think they do a 'Asia Experience' programme too!
I know a couple of people who have done this and they loved it!
By what I know I think the countries are fairly cheap when you get there (my bestfriend got a room in a 5* hotel in Thailand for £10 a night), and if you're really worried a credit card is always handy (for emergencies).

the Backpacker Price Index for Asia
I spend a lot of time in Thailand and I can spend as little as $10 Canadian per day. That's cheap accomodation, buying beer at the store and having food at markets. You can spend about $30 and live like queens. It's a bit more if you go to the Andaman Sea side (Railay, Phi Phi). This is based on the towns, the North, Bangkok and Gulf of Thailand side (Ko Samui, Ko Phangnan).
Cheers
Loraine
