So, I have been to the following places in Europe: France (twice), England, and Wales and have been to Tokyo, Japan. Now for this upcoming summer break, I am thinking on taking a month trip somewhere on the other side of the globe. I am looking for someplace else that I have not been to at all. I have already considered backpacking across europe, but i understand money can stretch much further in a few asian countries. My budget is a small $3,500 USD, and am willing to stay in places like hostels (i don't care about staying in a fancy hotel or go to fancy restaurants), as long as the towns I am in offer great things to do, like sightseeing. I have considered (for europe) a monthly trip by rail and backpack to Amsterdam to Berlin to someplace in Sweden, and as for asia, I was thinking Shanghai or Hong Kong, or possibly back to Japan but north or south of Tokyo.
10 surprisingly cheap European cities
Europe is the world's most expensive continent for U.S. travelers to visit; this probably doesn't shock anyone who's ventured across the Pond. You might be surprised, though, to discover which cities in Europe are remarkably affordable places to vacation. We analyzed the costs of hotel stays, meals, airfares, and activities in popular European destinations to find out which spots offer the best value for the euros and pounds. Here are 10 cities in Europe where budget-minded travelers can find low-cost hotel rooms, free activities, and travel bargains galore.
Rome
Prague
Dublin
Warsaw
Lisbon
Budapest
Birmingham
Berlin
Brussels
Vienna

I think the earlier reply is a bit misleading - I live in England and I find Dublin FLIPPING expensive to visit. Rome too, from that list, also Vienna.
Asia has the advantage of a) being generally cheap and b) having plenty of low cost flights to hop about. AirAsia, Tiger. I must be getting boring suggesting Taiwan whenever anyone asks about East Asia, as it's cheaper than Japan and (to me) very interesting. HK is also a great choice, I don't know how to do it on the cheap though, but plenty of worthwhile sights (star ferry, waterfront light show at night, visit the Peak or Stanley Market, see the Noonday Gun, dinner at Jumbo floating restaurant).
For Europe on the cheap, head East. Poland/Hungary/Ukraine/Slovakia etc. The expensive spots seem to be the city centres where EasyJet or Ryanair jet planeloads of weekending stag partiers and the prices shoot up accordingly. Stray from the middle of Krakow/Budapest/Prague and it gets a whole lot cheaper. The Baltic republics are cheap and interesting - maybe not world-class wow factor places but certainly interesting to see the mix of former-soviet-bloc life and architecture with new Europe. Give up your seat to a granny on a tram and they'll thank you in Russian, whereas the younger generations speak in their own language. Of the three republics and their capitals, Vilnius seemed pretty and ok (highlight was the KGB museum), Riga's big and modern, Tallinn has amazing olde worlde architecture plus the odd palace of the Tzars. For me a month doing Amsterdam - Berlin - Stockholm would be too slow, I'd want to pack in a little more, so you could always look at a loop using the Stockholm - Helsinki ferry then do Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, and back through Poland.
Thanks for the tips, oh and for the month long, i was planning on adding more (within a budget)
why dont you consider going to sub continent... india is a amazing aplce to vist.. the variety in culture would just surprise you.. and india is generouly cheap (if you dont act like idiot and throw money at each and every bagger)..
