South Africa Travel Advice

I am travelling to South Africa on my own at the start of Feb 2013. I fly into Johannesburg and plan on going to Kruger National Park and flying down to Cape town. Any advice on safety, tours, transport and accommodation would be greatly appreciated.

I'm in the process of completing a similar journey. I went from Johannesburg, to Cape Town, and finished off with Kruger National. Check out my blog:

A safari is the best way to appreciate the 'real' Africa. Try do a privately operated safari as all meals, game drives are included whereas a self drive in the Kruger park is easily done if you hire a car but game spotting will be less. Once you are in Cape Town there are endless accommodation, tours available depending on your budget. The Cape Winelands - Stellenbosch and Franshhoek are not to be missed where you can experience all that the Cape has to offer. South Africa is fairly safe but just be street wise and get your information from reliable sources. Lets chat!

Enjoy your trip.

I used BazBus when I was in South Africa and was really pleased with them. They offer door-to-door transport from backpacker's hostels in several cities from Cape Town to Jo'burg.

You'll find plenty of tour operators in Cape Town. I highly recommend doing a day trip around the Cape Peninsula and down to Cape Point.

In Cape Town I stayed in two different backpacker's hostels: the Cat & Moose and Big Blue. In Jo'burg I stayed at Gemini Backpacker's Lodge. I was very pleased with all of them. In fact, almost all of the backpacker's hostels I stayed in while I was in SA were excellent. They are all really helpful at giving you tips on tours, things to do, and how to stay safe while you're there.

I'll second Claire as well in regards to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek - absolutely stunning part of the country.

South Africa is wonderful place for spend vacations. Lots of interesting places for see there but Kruger national Park is awesome place. First time I saw Tiger in this park in front of me.

I have yet to see Tiger in Kruger, but kudos to you
