Hi there.
Im hoping to go travelling in Jan/Feb 2013 but have not booked anything yet.
The original plan was to finish the trip in Thailand in April/May but as this is the hottest time I am wondering if it would be better to start my trip there?
My only issue is that I am travelling alone and slightly nervous about setting off alone so how safe is Thailand for a lone female? I figured that by the end of the trip I would be well settled into travelling and wouldnt be nervous about it or I would have met people at that stage who would also be travelling to Thailand.
Also I really want to do some diving. I and a CMAS diver * so I think I can do a PADI advanced open water course. So would this course be far cheaper and better to do in Thailand than, say Hawaii or Australia?
Hi Polly,
Not being sure where in Thailand you will travel, I need to mention you might not experience the same weather in Phuket for example as you would in Samui in the Gulf of Thailand during the same time of year.
The up-side of visiting during Jan/Feb if you are going scuba diving is that under water visibility and sea conditions in general should be better than during May. Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand offers Padi registered dive schools, as does Phuket and Phi Phi.
I am not sure about prices for scuba courses in Australia, but it is generally excepted that prices for scuba courses in Thailand is very good.
As for your question of safety the short answer is yes, Thailand is safe for single female travelers. If you are going to attend the full moon party on Koh Phangan or enjoy the nightlife in Phi Phi it will certainly be advisable to be cautious and just use common sense, but otherwise it is perfectly safe.
Thanks for the information. I have alot more research to do but knowing that the diving conditions would be better early in the year is really helpful, I just have to decide where in Thailand to go diving now. As for travelling alone, I am beginning to feel more confident about it and as you said once I use common sense and not be careless I should be fine. Looking forward to getting it all figured out and getting there!
Hi Pollyireland
I'm looking to travel to Thailand, Indonesia and other areas around there in from February-May. I'm big into scuba diving and i am certified. A good part of my trip will be dedicated to diving and i am also travelling alone. I don't know what to expect, or where to go. But hey, thats the adventure. I just joined these forums today to find people doing similar trips that hopefully i could link up with to spend a day, two days, or a few weeks with. who knows!?
I'd love to give some actual advice for you on your trip but i have no clue hahaha
Thats cool, I havent really made any proper plans yet but Im going to do a diving course in Koa Tao, thats about all Im sure of at the moment. Also the Simian islands are supposed to be amazing for diving so definitely going to try have a dive or two there while Im in Thailand. Apart from that I hope to just hope around the islands and see and do as much as possible
- sorry Similan islands
