Travelling around New Zealand

jshurtley has indicated that this thread is about Auckland Region

I travelled with both Stray and Magic around New Zealand; I'd recommend both as they're sociable but not as party - orientated as Kiwi experience. Any of these are probably your best bet for getting around NZ, as the Inter -city buses aren't as sociable or as convenient.

As a counterpoint, I find intercity buses (and regional alternatives) very convenient. They're certainly faster and cheaper for just getting from place to place; socializing is something I get plenty of in hostels already.

Intercity are definitely cheaper but they don't drop you off at your hostel which the backpacker buses do, so that's a convenience I thought was worth paying a bit extra for, especially as a female travelling alone.

Ta for the advice!! I want to see New Zealand properly but i guess that the kiwi experience would show you that inbetween the general tourist bits.

My only worry is that i will get out there and everybody will be doing the kiwi experience and i will have to go my own way by myself.

That will definitely not be the case. I'd be very surprised it either Kiwi, Magic or Stray is transporting more than 10% of the travelling backpacker-population of New Zealand at any one time. Just look at the number of hostels in the average town; these tour busses always have one "standard" hostel where 90% of the people on the bus will stay at (generally I try to avoid these hostels, as that does mean there's a big clique - though still lots of non-bus people, too) - but all the other hostels are doing just fine with backpackers who travel independently.
