Hi there,
I'm new to this and was just wondering if I could get some advice.
My girlfriend and I are looking to go travelling for at least 6 months to Australia and south east Asia. I currently work full time as an optical assistant and will have been there around 18 months by the time we've planned to go. My only worry is not having a job when I return. As I have no official qualifications, I would be relying on 18 months experience. I'm 20 and my girlfriend is 19.. She has her place at university to go to when we return, so it's far more of a risk for me. Can someone offer me some advice on what to do?
Hi Sam,
I don't know where you are or what the jobs situation is but you have one thing going for you: your age! You're only planning on going (perhaps I should say coming ) for six months. When you get home you have your whole life ahead of you. I traveled with a back-pack when I was 28. My husband and I were away from Australia for four and a half years. We took six months to reach London, worked there for three and a half years then took six months to return home. We had no problems getting jobs when we got back.
good luck and go for it!
I agree - even in a bad economic climate, unless you are work shy, travelling should not affect whether you get a job, especially when you are so young and have a definite skill. Easy for someone else to say, but I would try not to worry about it, enjoy your trip and, if the nagging concern is still there, try and leave a little buffer in your budget to see you through while you job-search when you get back. Have an amazing trip!
Do what you gotta do buddy! You are young, so as your girlfriend... You got awesome plans, pursue it - travel! Don't worry much about your career, you'll find something great when you get back. I envy you taking a 6-month break, whooh sweet!
I think 6months trips for traveling purpose is so adventure. Except you have no problem about work or family. If now, you can arrange you job, you may experience a long trip. In the time you travel, may be you meet a great chance, who know. We are young and we should experience :D
When I read your post I picture someone on the beach, with their feet in the water..asking others if he should go deeper.. if he will be able to get back safely... if its worth it? Swim out! I can almost absolutely promise you that you won't regret having gone AND you will always regret it if you never do. You won't live forever. I personally know TOO many people who wished they would have traveled when they were younger.
Cheers to you not being one of them.
A bit late adding to this, but I have to step in and say that I agree with all of the above posters.
You are twenty!!! When I was your age I was 9 years away from even deciding what career I wanted, and now that I'm 34 I'm just barely beginning to find a permanent job. I've left and returned home, starting from scratch, about 8 times over the last 14 years. Do I regret it? Not a even a little. I had wonderful experiences and saw the world, and I still have 25 or more years to work and have a family and career before I need to retire.
So for you worrying about "risking" not having anything thing when you return at 21 or 22 or whenever? - nonsense. Go, enjoy, life live, and see what it brings you.
Dude, you're 20. You have your while life ahead of you. Stop worrying.
Go and have a blast and let the future take care of itself.
Hi Sam,
As per my advice, if you don’t have any kind of issue about your job and family then this long trip will be an exciting activity for you. After completing your long trip, you may have a lot of chances. So don’t worry about this and try to have such great trip with your girl friend and enjoy a lot.
