Hey all
Forget Vodaphone reception is crap. Lebara I have heard do some great cheap calls out of Australia, Checkout Amaysim they have a $39 a month unlimited plan pay by the month (not sure how you go with International calls though) Or even optus pre paid most come with unlimited text and social networks.
Completely agree re: Vodafone. They do not provide the same kind of service in Australia at all.
Would also recommend checking out Virgin: https://www.virginmobile.com.au/prepaid-mobile-phones-plans/compare/
I've had good luck with Optus reception and pricing. Optus is the second biggest network after Vodafone. Lebara have some great deals, but they use the Vodaphone network. These networks seem to be a victim of their own success. They have so many users and then can't handle the traffic. Maybe Vodafone has it sorted out now, telecommunications changes very fast. Some SIM's are now offered free, and most are only about $5. So you might have to try one or two before you find one that suits. Some areas will have better reception for one network than another.
To confirm, Optus is second biggest after Telstra. They used to be the only supplier and in some regional areas are still the only service available. Vodafone is third after Optus but with a significantly smaller network and problems for some users even in the big cities. Any mobile provider will use one of these three networks, so just check which before proceeding.
Hi,
I used Telstra when I was there. It was $30 for a prepaid card and you got around 200 minutes with that + free nights and weekends, as well as free texts. It also gave you about 400MB data (enough for emergencies!). Not sure about the international calling, but I would get a $10 phone card (you can buy them at almost any corner store) and use that and call from your cell phone. It was incredibly cheap that way! The $10 card did not run out in 3 months and I was making fairly frequent (weekly) calls to Canada!
Hope that helps!
Hey
Thanks for responses all great advice. Am here now and went with lebara on a sim only option. Although they use vodaphone as network the options were too competitive and good option to call home if anyone's looking for sim options
Thanks
Hi guys,
I am moving to Oz in August and just wondered if I can use my handset from the UK if it is unlocked? I have apps on it like Viber so would make it cheaper to call home? Do I just need a pay as you go sim when I am there?
Hi
I'm using an unlocked phone from uk and just stuck a pay monthly sim in there without problems. I opted for lebara which has really cheap deals and so far have had no problems at all (touch wood)
