my boyfriend and I are planning on driving round America for 3 months but we don't have a clue how much money we would need.
Not including fuel for that vehicle, I'd say a minimum of $150. a day for 2 people. Prices are generally higher in coastal areas. (maybe a little more for New York, Boston, Washington, San Francisco and LA)
(Parking a car in NY or SF can be extremely expensive, and it's far easier to use public transportation there)

Firstly what type of car are you looking at? Have you checked the miles per gallon for that particular car? Some are a lot lower than others and could save you quite a lot in fuel costs.
I am doing a 3 month trip also, we were going to go for a full size SUV but decided on something smaller as we are doing 4500+ miles and could save over 10 miles a gallon with a different vehicle.
I have looked into the cost of some motels and it vary's, what time of year are you planning on travelling?
I'm planning on going in about 6 months and plan on living in Vancouver for a year after on a working holiday visa.
We were just planning on getting a small convertible if possible but again we were planning on saving as much as possible where we can and want to and i know a convertible isnt the cheapest but its the whole american driving idea... or ours at least lol.
we're aware that it's going to cost quite a bit esp with entry fees etc which is why we want to save where we can... but still enjoy it (we're both travel agents so have been a bit spoilt by the company with 4/5* hotels) so we are a bit stuck on which motels/ hostels that we can stay in as we're quite fussy and want an ensuite.
