First time Traveller going solo...Help Needed!

Hey everyone!

Why don't you work while being in Australia, so you can move on to Asia after? Then you get two of your wishes.

My trip is similar to yours except I'm not going until March and I'm not going to America, I was given the advice by my travel agent to cut cost by staying to one side of the world, my flights are Thailand - New Zealand - Australia and Dubai, however I'm also booking inland flights throughout Asia, to Vietnam and Cambodia, I'm only travelling for five months and hopefully will have approx. £6-7 grand travelling money, most of which will pay for New Zealand as that's my main focus for the six weeks I'm their and some of that I'll put by for Australia as its notoriously expensive. how much do you have saved?

Ros

Hey Ros

I've decided to just stick to one area now, probably just do a stint in Oz see how I get along. At the moment I've saved about 3 1/2 grand hoping to have around 5grand by the time I go, so not much but I've got a fair few friends houses to crash at so il save money there and I'll probably end up getting a working visa so I can try and get extra funds while I'm there.

I've been told it might work out better for me to book a one way flight then book my return when I'm there, just incase my plans change, good plan? Maybe? Ha!

Chloe

I plan on doing much the same thing and spend six months (or more) in Australia. My plan is to go in March and on a WHV.

As long as you're under 31, I would go the working holiday visa route. That way you can work if you want to and fund more of your trip. This means you'll need that $5000 in your bank account, a WHV (which you can get online), a bank account in Oz (which you set up when you get there), and a tax file number (which you also can get online when you're in Australia). Those are the three big things that agencies help you set up, but it's easy enough and far cheaper to take care of it all on your own.

Hi Chloe,

I'm heading out to Sydney in time for NYE and I booked my flights using Skyscanner which was really easy to do. Accommodation and trips I'm just going to do directly rather than going through someone like STA. I've seen some pretty bad reviews of them so I'd rather just sort it myself.

Where in Australia are you planning on going? I'm only there for a month (couldn't get anymore time off work!) so I'm going to Sydney/Brisbane/Melbourne in that order.

If you need any help with anything let me know.

Gareth

Working holiday is the best way to go down under incase you run low on money but if you enter the country without a return ticket you need 5G in the bank to prove that you can get home and aren't planning to stay. Check out the department if immigration site to double check hut that was the case with us! Australia is expensive but many hostels in the tropical north will let you work for accommodation and food and its a good way to make friends.

I'm going on a WHV to New Zealand for a year. I started off chatting to an agent at STA travel, but I haven't booked anything through them yet. They're good at giving you pointers and advice, so don't be put off.

I have, however, found my flights cheapest through STA. It's a case of looking around, researching and asking plenty of questions. My biggest help has been this forum, so stick around because you'll be surprised how many people are in the same boat as you.
