Hey, I am also going to be in Vietnam from 18th onwards ( I am travelling from cambodia with a tour). I have booked two nights in HCMC but after that I am left to my own devices. I have read a little about tet but don't have too much info on accomodation/ travel around that time.

I will keep an eye out and let you know! if you hear anything please let me know too ( I hope it's not too bad and that travel will be possible otherwise I will have to stay put! hah)

Hi Emma,
I'm going to be in Hanoi from 18th and travelling down so sounds like we're going cross paths. I have not booked anything yet which is why I'm on here, need to start planning. I've read that transport and accommodation is limited during the week up to and during new year. They are celebrating from 31/01/14. I also know that shops, museums and restaurants are likely to be closed or very limited?! I want to find out where will have the best festival and head there. Will keep you posted if I find out anymore.

Hi! We were in booked tours out of Hanoi to Sapa and Halong Bay during Tet. Hanoi completely closes down, most people spend the holiday with family. We booked the tours only a day before Tet however for Halong only one boat was running over the holiday so we didn't get much choice. We didn't have any problems but I wouldn't necessarily recommend going during tet. Booking tours during that period is probably a good idea otherwise I don't think there will be anything to do/anywhere to eat. This was our experience in Hanoi anyway. Vietnam is amazing, you'll have the best time!

No one mentioned that Vietnam will also be much more expensive during Tet - esp hotels, and transport (that is if you can find any?) Personally, I've booked my own trip for March - cheaper, fewer problems and warmer in the north.

Hi, I am going to be in Vietnam from 18/01/2014 which means I will be there during their new year. Do you have any advice? I've been told to book my accommodation in advance and that transport will be limited. Is it something worth experiencing or should I consider delaying my trip until the celebrations are over?
Help please :-)
Thanks

I think that, you really lucky when you go to Vietnam celebrate that is Vietnam Tet, you can more understand about Vietnam such as custom, culture and people here.
When traveling in Vietnam, you should avoid mosquito bites to prevent malaria. You may need to take prescription medicine before, during, and after your trip to prevent malaria, depending on your travel plans, such as where you are going, when you are traveling, and if you are spending a lot of time outdoors or sleeping outside. Talk to your doctor about how you can prevent malaria while traveling. For more information on malaria in Vietnam

you remember, if you go to Viet nam, you should reservation hotel and book tour for example: Halong bay, Sapa moutain, Chua huong pagoda.... you can access on website: -snip-

Laura,
I was in HaNoi over Tet years ago. Here are the problems I encountered. Every VN person that can is supposed to travel back home to spend Tet with family. This means a mass exodus from the large cities a few days before Tet and a reverse flow back into the large cities when Tet is over. All transport is basically 'fully booked' over these days. Very difficult to move around on those days. It is not so bad the actual 5 days of Tet. Everyone is already back home. You should be OK Feb. 1-5 2014. Since most workers went home, many restaurants were not open. That was a challenge. All of the sightseeing in HaNoi was shut down for 5 days. Not much for a visitor to do over those days. Unless you meet a local that invites you to their home to celebrate Tet with them. That would make it worthwhile. That did not happen to me, so it was kind of a wasted 5 days IMO. My advice would be to finish your time in VN before Tet kicks off or hit VN after Tet. Or get to a beach resort and kick back for those 5 days. talks about one I visited north of Nha Trang that might be just the place to relax.

Good luck with your planning.

Thanks for your help, I think I'm even more confused now, don't know what to do.
