Not Going Alone

I’m a senior in college who hopes to travel/backpack the world during recesses (Winter, Spring, and Summer).

What do your parents mean by 'too dangerous'? Where is too dangerous exactly? Some parts of the world are dangerous, others aren't. Many are probably safer than the US. It's a very sweeping statement for them to make. Secondly, aren't you at an age where you don't have to do what your parents say? I'm sure my parents were worried when I went off round the world on my own, but I certainly wouldn't have let it stop me doing it, and they wouldn't have wanted their own fears or worries to affect my plans or dreams.

If you set off alone you'll undoubtedly meet other people to hang out with or travel on with anyway. In hostels in most parts of the world it's really easy to meet others and many of them will be travelling solo too.

Where are you thinking of going?

You could try the travel companions forum on this site - if you specify where you're going and when it's quite possible you'll get responses from other people with similar plans.

I see your parents point with all the horror stories on the news recently, but at the same time the news doesn't feature wonderful stories like "Quest446 made a whole bunch of fantastic friends while backpacking around...."

Even if you meet up with someone from here, from your college or on a travel programme there's no way of knowing if you'll enjoy travelling with each other, even though you might get on great. If you go on the Travel Companion section of this forum you'll see lots of peoples take on this.

Travelling on your own you are more likely to meet friendly people who share the same interests as you because you'll meet them doing the activities you've chosen to do.

Your parents make a good decision.because many country or place not very safe for travel.u can visit in my country.my country is bangladesh.i will help you every moment or every step.u also contact many travel agency for help you.

Unless you are very dumb, utterly clueless kid then your parent's stance is (obviously) 100% illogical. There are LOTS of safe, fun, predictable, easy to navigate destinations all over the world that are perfect for a first time, inexperienced traveller who is prepared.

Use common sense in choosing your destination, make sure you're not so far off the beaten path that you can't easily Skype/FaceTime/etc. on a regular basis so your parents are kept calm, do all the proper research so you're prepared and then go for it, the very same as millions of kids before you. This is NOT breaking any new ground.

Have fun.

Cheers,
Terry

If you're not going alone to travel because your parents told you that it's dangerous, you can find some travel buddies in this forum. There are a lot of members in the Travel Companions section who are looking for travel buddies.

You know parents are the same, no matter time nor place, they don't understand that us kids are going to make some mistakes. So to you, all the kids all across the land, there's no need to argue... Parents just don't understand
