Your questions are mostly too general to comment on... no one can give you advice about budget when you give no clue where you're travelling, no one can offer an opinion on how to handle your job when you give no clue of your profession, etc.
As for getting up the courage to tell others... you're planning on doing something that millions and millions of other young people have done for ages, it's not breaking new ground nor is it "weird" in any way...

First thing, save as much as you can and then a bit more!
You said you know exactly where you want to go. In that case, start researching costs for that city/country/countries. You could try looking at the above or reading up on for an idea of prices.
Each country has different costs and economic factors so we can't give specific advice on budgets without knowing your intended destinations.
You might also like to check out for volunteer inspiration.
Work out where you want to go, research the best time to go to that destination, and then you can work out how hard you need to hustle in order to save in that time frame. If you can wait longer to travel, do it, and save even harder so you can travel within your means.
Managing things on the home front (work, rent, etc) will depend on how long you choose to travel as well. You will know if you can take a year off or need to pack a tight 3 month schedule. Balance your options; talk to a colleague if you need to, and make the best choice for you, both in the financial and adventure sense.
And don't worry about travelling alone; there will no doubt be travellers you can get in touch with through these forums or you'll meet others on the road.

Thanks for the replies I'm planning on going to Thailand first, then onto Australia and New Zealand; not sure which country I'm heading to after but I definitely want to visit parts of South America, the USA, France and Italy. I'd rent an apartment in some countries as I'd like stay there longer than a few weeks. I don't have a solid plan right now but I'm just researching I work in retail and I'm guessing this will probably change before the trip. I don't know if this helps at all.
Presuming you are not in a management position, retail is very easy to leave and pick up again at a later date so I wouldn't worry about leaving your current job.
Will you be working as you travel at all?
For starters like you, you've got to list your destinations and as early as now get some information of those areas and possible estimated cost so you'll know what possible funds you can save to make that trip possible. Don't settle for least expand your creativity in traveling and you'll love the fun you'll get.
