I hope you have all been enjoying the pictures of the America's Cup races in San Francisco Bay during the past month or so.
Yep - brilliant. Coverage is all over the place here in New Zealand. ETNZ were robbed by the clock this morning.
I just read that Team USA's boat Oracle won the . New Zealand held an 8 to 1 lead at one point, forcing Team USA to win 8 races in a row. A historic comeback, too bad the TV coverage in the US was non existent.
There's a joke going around here in NZ about why US women like NZ men but it's far too rude to post here!
NZ was gutted yesterday! But it was a brave fight by ETNZ and the Oracle boat was built in NZ too although a Brit, Ben Ainslie was in control of Oracle.
And in addition to the team having the great English Olympian, Sir Ben Ainslie, the skipper for Oracle Team USA towards the end was the Australian, Jimmy Spithill.
Just goes to show that we in the USA can win the cup as long as we "borrow" a little foreign knowledge and muscle from our overseas friends.
As far as the racing, there was a very large USA turnout and interest towards the end when the scores finally got closer. As a sailor myself, I found the races fascinating for their strategy, sportsmanship, and, of course, for the phenomenal speeds and high-tech designs.
I'm not sure "gutted" is the right word for the final race. With 5 marks to pass, the USA trailed at Marks 1 and 2 before putting on a fantastic burst of speed heading upwind to Mark 3 and taking control of the race.
Don't know if they will keep the races in the San Francisco Bay or move them to somewhere else in the USA for the next go-around (for example, San Diego or Newport in Rhode Island. I'm guessing they will stay in SF.

The term "gutted' is a Brit expression for extreme disappointment. The final race was very close most of the way, but all of New Zealand was "gutted" or disappointed when Team USA won.
US commentators are saying it is the biggest comeback of all time in US sports. Down 8 to 1 and needing 8 consecutive victories seems almost impossible. I just did not see any coverage of America's Cup until the final races. It was not on most Americans radar until the final day. Sad, but most of Americans are not sailors or watch sailing on TV. That is why it did not get much coverage.
