Split or Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik for my money. Also Korsula if you're passing.

Plitvice lakes is good but only took us a couple of hours. Makes a good stop on a travel day.

Thanks Andy. As a follow-up, I will be taking the train for most travels but thinking about renting a car in Zagreb to go to Split and Dubrovnik, is it a good drive?

Not sure - did Plitvice to Split on a bus, and Dubrovnik was on a different trip. I recall an impressive tunnel through the big wall of limestone hills and an abrupt change in climate. But not a lot else.

I don't know about Split, but if you're in Croatia to tick off another country on your bucket list, you could stop in Split. Otherwise continue down to Dubrovnik as well. It's a World heritage site and I can guarantee a fascinating place to see. Besides you will get to enjoy more of the lovely coastline of Croatia, like a few years ago.

Sandland -- Thanks for the info. The only reason I was hesitating about Dubrovnik is the reviews of people saying it is overcrowded with tourists. I am leaning in going there as it sounds and looks absolutely gorgeous. Loved you blog post on the area as well.

I would recommend visiting both Split and Dubrovnik, if you have the time!
There aren't as many tourist in Dubrovnik at the moment. Late Sept. is a nice time to visit!
Sea temperature 24C, sunny today! Enjoy your travel!

Marcela, from Dubrovnik

Thanks Marcella, appreciate the info!

Check out Trogir. One of my favorite European trips. We personally did not care for Split--it's a busy shipping port but the ferry schedule is extensive there-- Trogir had fantastic food, super friendly people and just adorable! It's the only European vacation we've taken where my husband booked the same room for the following year while we were still at the Villa!

Dubrovnik is of course, beautiful as well but as mentioned before--certainly swarming with tourists. We chartered a boat in Trogir to island hop- A truly fantastic trip. Relaxing and very inexpensive! (nice change!)

Also, as an alternative to Plitvice--we visited Krka National Park- Definitely not on Plitvice "Avatar" level but absolutely beautiful and it was closer and we were feeing lazy which made it a great option!
