I'm trying to book a night in a hostel and after I've entered my details and hit 'confirm booking', I'm getting the message "invalid nationality" and am unable to complete the booking. My nationality is entered as United Kingdom. I've tried a few times. Help!
Hi bex, just a heads up on this one -- UK is now removed from the list so it won't bug us again. I'm sure it has caught a few people out this one, so thanks for prompting a fix!
Hi Peter
Thanks for this, but I think it's the England option that needs to be removed and the UK option kept and fixed. Otherwise someone from Scotland, NI or Wales hasn't got an appropriate nationality to select.
Unfortunately that restriction comes from Hostelworld who is processing it. They will throw an invalid nationality if it was UK.
We have Scotland,NI and Wales available as options to select in the list as well, so there is something there.
Ah ok. Thank you.
What would someone from the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands put as their nationality - they don't seem to be an option.
I always find it bizarre when places don't put UK in a dropdown like that for nationality but insist on splitting it up to England/Wales/Scotland/NI, particularly as often this question can be linked to citizenship (i.e. what passport would a place expect to see for ID when checking in).
Oh, and I just checked and it seems UK is still on the list as an option lower down, between UAE and US Virgin Islands.

Jersey, Guernsey and Isle of Man are all on the list.
I had the file in the wrong spot which is why UK was still showing.. oops fixed now.
FWIW, I do agree, but unfortunately if I pass UK downstream then we get this error that bex had. And just letting people select UK and then changing it in the background to England seems worse.
Jersey, Guernsey and Isle of Man are all on the list.
So they are - but they're not on the HostelWorld website as options. Would that cause an error too if anyone from those tried to make a booking?
Hmm good question. Hadn't noticed that. Yeah, I guess there is a pretty good chance they would cause problems. I'll have to do some tests and question the guys over there on this!
