I'm going to be in Bangkok in November and would like to visit Ayutthaya for the day. Can anyone advise the best way to get there? I've read about minibuses that go from the Victory monument, as well as public buses and trains. I assume there is no need to take an organised tour.
Tours to Ayudthaya are pretty easy to get. Some hotels have tour desks where you can sign up. Many tourists in Bangkok sign on to tours through city travel agencies. They are all over the place, just find the nearest one to your hotel. They will have a list of tours you can sign on to. These are shared van tours. You will be picked up at your hotel and returned there at the end of the day. This is a good way to meet people too.
If you want to do it on yourself there is information on the net you can look over. I have only used travel agency tours. I like the convenience of being picked up at the hotel and returned there - no muss no fuss!
Besides a Google search you can also ask your hotel front desk person too. (Sample internet search below.)

Thanks karazyal. Did you get taken to straight to Ayutthaya on your tour or did it include any hidden extras? A friend of mine did a tour and spent half the morning at a palace on the way there, which reduced the time he had at the temples, so that put me off doing tours a little.
I can't remember being inconvenienced on any stops for too long. I don't mind stops because they present an opportunity to use a toilet and not a bush!
I have been on many tours over the years and other than some cheap snacks I can't remember buying anything more than 50 baht. Every now and then I accompany friends from back home on local tours if we're in the city at the same time..
Entering the van I try to act quickly and grab a seat in the van where I can stretch out a bum leg. That can be a little bit of a bother sometimes. I try to avoid seats in a van all the way in the back.
I bring a novel to read during the ride. Along with my TP and moist hand wipes too in my walk-around bag.
There must be a hundred private tour companies in Bangkok some may linger longer at some tourist stops than others. I have met some interesting people on these van tours.

Thank you, I think I'll look into a tour then as it does sound more convenient. I'm staying in Suhkumvit so hopefully there should be plenty of tour agencies around there.
You can catch a train there very cheap for like $1. Or go to Victory Monument and catch a van there very cheap.
Most tourists however book through their accommodation and get charged a premium. Nonetheless, it is quite easy to get to, just ask around.
If you go up to Ayutthaya, head up a bit further to Lopburi for the day to see wild monkeys roaming all over the town.
