Pattaya is about 2 hours away by cheap bus. This is a beach area that has hotels cheaper than Bangkok and definitely cheaper than Phuket. The beach at Pattaya is no good for swimming but okay for nightlife, malls, sunbathing, shopping, restaurants, etc. Many hotels have pools you can use.
There is nightlife in this Pattaya City area. But you will not be forced into any beer bar against your will. If you do visit a hotel not far from Pattaya Second Road (Sai Song) or Pattaya Beach Road will enable you to walk to many things. (City transportation is only 10 baht using baht buses.)
This is one cheap option for a couple days not too far from Bangkok.
In Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket and other cities popular with tourists you can sign on to tours through local travel agencies on short notice.

I agree with above post. Pattaya is probably your best bet. There is a good beach option over on . talks about my day trip over there. For a young guy, Pattaya can be a very fun place to be. Wine, women & song plus beach. Give it a try. Good luck with your planning.
If you are only interested in partying in one of the world's seediest areas, then go to Pattaya. If you are interested in some culture and relaxing, there are many better choices. Kanchanaburi is very close and a nice provincial town with lots of history, riverside restaurants, as well as hiking, elephants, tigers and all that. Ayathaya is also nearby and it's a chance to see some ancient Thai culture with wonderful historical temples. It's only a couple hours from Bangkok and easily worked into a route including Kanchanaburi.

Sure some people do go to Pattaya for partying - but there are also many family groups who visit Pattaya too! Not to mention thousands of Thai families who show up on weekends too!
Pattaya is a beach area where families can stretch their budgets out a little bit. Cheap restaurants, cheaper hotels than other beach areas, cheap city transportation, etc. The malls are full of tourists family groups, tourist couples and even women tourists on their own.
Google type search will give you the "family friendly options" and "things to see and do!"
Can't really comment on Pattaya as i have not been there, however i agree with Degolasse, Kanchanaburi is a very interesting place, especially if you have any interest in history and the plight of the allied troops.
For something a bit quieter further down the coast from the hustle and bustle (and other things!) in Pattaya, the island of Koh Samet is beautiful and calm with lots of different isolated bays and beachside accomodation if that tickles your fancy?!
You can get a bus to Ban Phei from the eastern bus station (Ekamai) in Bangkok, then a cab to the dock, and depending what time you arrive get the ferry across to the island.
Note that the direct bus is supposed to take 3 hours, not sure if we got the right one as it stopped everywhere and took alot longer so maybe just confirm that before stepping on to a bus!
No no don't go to Pattaya!!! It will spoil your idea of Thailand for ever!
I highly recommend going to Khao Yai National Park. Stay with Greanleaf hostel and do both of their incredibly cheap tours - you won't regret it! I've been twice!
The guides are so enthusiastic, you get to see so much wildlife (including wild elephants if you're lucky), the guesthouse is basic but dirt cheap and the food at the guesthouse is great!!
