Hi Everyone
Most of the Asian countries mentioned are cheap and if you want, very cheap. It does depend on what level of comfort you want, whether you will eat like the locals, etc.
Ideally I would think at least £1,000 per month for both of you though some here can do it cheaper, and some will want more. Really the best answer to such a question is take as much money as possible. Maybe some credit cards for emergencies?
Just adding flights to South America alone would add substantially to your costs. Maybe next year?
Many thanks Cyberia. We have decided to just stick to asia and thoroughly enjoy / explore it! Budget seems reasonable too.
Whats your suggestion on routes? Must do things? Sights??
We have been to China a couple of times in non tourist areas and it's a bit of a challenge from the language point of view but well worth the effort.
We loved the Chinese people actually stayed with a Chinese family who we contacted thru
http://www.hospitalityclub.org/
and will certainly go back again. We found the Chinese people very friendly and helpful and I'd recommend China.
SEA is easy traveling and is a well done route for most travelers and you'll not have any problems.
Not been to Japan yet because the weather as never been right for the time we traveled but it is very expensive our daughter was there a couple of years ago so save for this country.
India
Everyone travels by train but I would recommend only AC the non AC 3rd class is not good. By your tickets from the station it's much cheaper than thru an agent in advance.
Travel the Golden Triangle, do go to Agra to see the Taj arrive there about 6 in the morning, we got a hotel within walking distance, don't wait by the gate as everyone does to see the sun come up but go in and you'll get some amazing photographs without anyone being on them.
I don't need to tell you to take Immodium with you and safe hands if you are seasoned travelers.
South America I have little experience, only Ecuador stayed in Quito on two occasions when coming back from the Galapagos Islands (a definite recommendation but expensive).
The police carry around weapons in the old town for tourist protection which is a bit worrying.
Even with this security we have things stolen, and a local came up to warn us about walking into an area were he told us we would be murdered for our camera. On another occasion another local said put your camera away.
Obviously not everywhere is the same but when locals warn you of dangers you need to take it seriously.
When we did I first round the world for 12 months that was back in 2008 we spend £28000 but it all depends on what level of comfort as people say you want. The activities you want to do and the site seeing which can all cost big money.
In 2010 we spend £15000 on 4 months in Europe using our own car and camping mostly.
Check out this site it as some great information for travelers
