Hey James. I'm travelling to cairns from London end of May.. Then travelling down the east coast, then over to NZ when I get to Melbourne! Not sure if this fits in with any of your dates/plans? I'm travelling solo until I meet people! A little worried! :/

Bring plenty of money to Auckland; it's not a cheap place! A pint (450mL, not 568mL) in a pub will cost at least NZD8.50 (GBP4,30).

Flying from Heathrow on the 9th to Brisbane then was giving myself a month to get up the East Coast before flying to Auckland

Cairns can be a tough place to get a decent flight out of for NZ. Better to go from Gold Coast, Brisbane or Sydney.
You'd do better to fly into Brisbane and get straight on a flight to Cairns, then work your way down.
Other than places around Cairns like the Daintree, and tablelands, you can stop at Mission Beach, Airlie beach, (whitsundays), Hervey Bay (frasier Island).
