You can fly to Krabi or Phuket or take the bus from Morchit bus station. You can then take the ferry to Phi Phi Island. You can get the ferry tickets from any travel agency in Bangkok, Krabi or Phuket.

Not at all. It's arguably the most most backpacker friendly "non western" destination on the planet. It has a fabulous backpacker infrastructure geared specifically for first time travellers exactly like yourself.

We took a bus from Phangan to Phi Phi which dropped us at the ferry dock. I imagine you can do the return. Just ask a travel agent on Phi Phi, there are a bunch of them. It's an easy transfer but if I remember correctly, quite a bit of waiting time halfway at a small restaurant for a bus change, but people help you and you'll know what bus you need etc. Thailand will be fine travelling alone, just take the usual precautions and use common sense. I'd suggest taking as little luggage as possible and keeping it on your person on the buses (ie. Backpack on your lap). The only storiee we heard were of stolen items while bags were under the bus, but Thailand is pretty safe. Enjoy!
