I just notice I have gone from "Budding" to "Respected".
Cool!
Sander will be along to explain the algorithm soon hopefully.
Interesting that it jumped straight to that.. It's meant to go via "Full Member" first.
But hey, it seems reasonable to be on Respected. The algorithm is somewhat complicated. Sufficiently complicated that it does unpredictable things like this.

Maybe it did go to Full, & I did not notice. Perhaps a note to members when status changes would be nice,

I think that would give undue importance to this "status". I think it should just be something which naturally grows with your use of the site (which the algorithm behind it tries to ensure, giving extra weight to high quality contributions, but counting them all). It is strange that you skipped Full Member completely (which seems to be the case; googlebot has never seen you with a Full Member title); might indicate that algorithm needing a tweak.
I would be interested in hearing thoughts on a badge or some kind of subtle change on user profiles, as Sander says, that naturally develops with use of the site.
Would it be suitable if, instead of notifying members of a change, their public profile could automatically update to reflect their growing contributions to the community?
I would like to know what the levels are & what difference they make other than a name change.

New Member, Full Member, Respected Member, Travel Guru.
There's a limited number of Travel Gurus and Respected Members, with that title depending on all contributions on the entire site over time, so someone who'd leave could over time drop back down to Full Member.
I'm hazy on the exact differences between the different statuses, but there's basically two types of changes which you'll see with a new status:
"Rewards"
- You can store more gigabytes of original photos (for backup) in the photo gallery.
- You can start more blogs (not blog entries, those are unlimited, but really completely separate blogs; that's clamped to just 5 for new members, and goes up to 50 for travel gurus iirc; either way, more than you could ever conceivably need)).
"Responsibilities"
- You can post in protected articles in the travel guide, and do basic moderating actions in that guide.
- You can "report" posts when they're spam, duplicate or inflammatory, which hides them from public view and flags them for attention by a moderator.
- Your accommodation reviews automatically get the "trusted" flag even when you haven't booked through the site.
