Campervan in New Zealand

Hi all,

Would really appreciate any help that anyone has to offer

Hi Antonio

Campervans in NZ is such a grey area, I was looking to do the same but couldn't find much info and all the CVs I did see were way over my budget. It's a shame they don't have a set up like wickedcampers in Aus which are so cheap and guarantee buyback, apparently they do but I can't seem to figure it out. Anyway there is this site called trademe.co.nz which has loads of things on and I've seen a few campers on it, you may be able to find a bargain on it.

Good luck!

Hi A,

Thanks, they all seem so much more than my budget will allow!...dnt really think we can afford to buy one incase we have any hassle trying to sell it back at the end...everyone has said that they are a really cost effective way of travelling but they seem to be much more than the bus passes and what accommodation would be....as I have never been before I have no experience and do not know which way to go about it!...u said u was looking to do the same what did you do in the end? or are u still deciding?

We are staying in NZ for 5 months so I've decided to leave the campervan idea, I can't really see how it will work out any cheaper after finding places to stay with it, fuel, insurance etc.. and trying to find someone to buy it in time for us to leave. It just seems more hassle than staying in hostels and using buses and although it would be nice to have our own transport I'm sure a bicycle and public transport will suffice!

thanks for all the advice...we have decided we are going to wait until we get there and see what we can find...we do not want to limit ourselves by getting tied down to a deposit so hopefully we will find something good when we are there! fingers crossed!

Hey Antonio,

Exactly this time last year myself & gf was in NZ - we looked at all the options available to travel around NZ an to see the places we wanted to see but none of the tours would give us the freedom we wanted in stoppin in random places or going off the tourist trail..so we ended up hiring off WickedCampers for 4weeks.

Yes they seem somewhat expensive, but when you can eat/sleep in your campervan your saving so much in the long run im my opinion anyways. Plus NZ is by far the best country ive ever been to that cater for campers..loads an loads of campsites where you pay/donate usually no more than 10NZD to camp, an they all have cold shower/ kitchen/toliet facilties.

Ive still got my travel itenary an cost figures for my trip so if u wanna have a look then drop me a private message on here an i can arrange to send on to ya.

Anymore help just gimme a shout

Hiya

Just returned from a 2 month trip in NZ, me and my BF bought a camper, cost us $1950 from a car market in Auckland, and we have left it with the backpacker market in Christchurch for them to sell it for us (asking price $2000), so we will be getting all our money back on it. Better than throwing away your money at a rental company. We got AA cover just incase anything happened, which was only $70. Was definitely worth it! I loved my camper <3

If you're set on renting, the companies we saw the most were Wicked, Escape, Backpacker, Jucy, Hippy Camper, Happy Campers......

Definitely worth getting one though, you can free camp, or stay in a holiday park (around $15 each) or in a DOC campsite ($7 ish a night each) which is ALOT cheaper than hostel dorms which are about $25 a night each or if you want a private room its about $65 a night.

Hi ErolGirl,

Thanks for the reply. We were hoping we would find something like that. We land in Christchurch and will be flying out of Auckland so we will hopefully by there and sell in Auckland.

Do you have the website or name of the company you bought from? and any info about the one you bought for that price. age, condition etc.

How hard did you have to try to sell your camper? The only thing that scares me is not selling and it keeping us in NZ for alot longer as we cant sell!

Thanks,

Antonio

Have you thought about relocating a camper? It's normally free including the ferry and you have 5 days to travel in it
