I'm in the United States and would like to travel to India, but don't want to fly. I thought it would be cool to ride across on a cargo ship or something similar. I don't know if there are still ways to do that or if anyone has done something similar. I'm looking for cheap fare or a carrying your own weight. If anyone can give me suggestions or idea, that would be great.

Hi John,
I know of a Dutch company offering all sorts of trips, but I am afraid that cheap is not in their vocabulary
It is called and if not an option for you it is nice to see all the trips. It surely is much more fun than a regular cruise I guess.
Maybe you could go first to China and travel overland from there if you want the cheapest ones.
Cheers
Michael.
There is the occasional repositioning cruise as cruise lines transition from the Caribbean to the Mediterranean - usually once a year in both directions. Trips on cargo ships are VERY PRICEY as this is very limited service, and in order for this to be profitable, these ships cater to the high rollers (as I understand it). Any way you look at it, travel by ship will be not be cheap.
Although you might not want to fly, 2 of the world's finest airlines can get you to India from the States via the Pacific - Singapore Airlines and Asiana Airlines - both 5* carriers, and very comfortable even in economy.
