Every Train or any Train has limited seats or berths. If you have a wait listed ticket it means, that you do NOT have a confirmed seat or berth. If you have a RAC ticket, it means you have a ticket that offers you a confirmed seat but may be confirmed on the train depending on cancellations of the last moment. Chart has to be prepared means that seats/berths have not been allotted but this will be beneficial to those who have tickets but have given a letter to authorities where the train originates for release of seat/berth under Emergency Quota.
Foreigners have an exclusive quota in Indian railways and you can try under this. There are many trains to a destination and you can choose by choosing trains with the least Waitlisted/RAC number.
RAC st ands for " Reservation against Cancellation" meaning you are in a que and in case
some people or railway staff cancell their programme you may get a seat.
Please do not rely on train reservation unless confirmed.
2 months in advance is a lot of time and your ticket might get confirmed. Sometimes waitlist 200 also gets confirmed. It depends on the train, season and some other factors.
You can keep checking your PNR status online. Which train is it & what is wtlist/RAC no. if I may ask?
@tripster: Please indicate the following things:
1. Is your ticket in Wait list or RAC?
2. What is the RAC or Wait list number mentioned on the ticket, mention both the numbers
3. Which is the train in which you have booked the ticket and the originating and final destination.
4. What is the class of your travel?
Since there are 2 months left for your journey, there is a fair chance of your ticket getting confirmed, but if this does not happen or the wait list is very huge, then you can try the foreign quota tickets which are available at all the major train stations.

If you have a RAC ticket that means you have as eat confirmed but not a berth.
Few days before the departure date , check your status, most likely your berth would be confirmed. Sometimes, you may not know if your berth is confirmed till the last day. So be prepared to check on the last day too
Chart preparation means that the authorities prepare the final chart a few hours before the departure of the train after taking into consideration all cancellations made, total number of berths available etc and all passenger would know their status which is final.
Incase(example) you have a wait list ticket( with a number 10) chances that on the date of departure there is a good chances that your ticket could be confirmed with a berth. Or you could get a RAC.It all depends on the situation.
With RAC ticket you can get into the train..but with w/L ticket you are not supposed to.
There is no point in checking your status of your ticket everyday.
Suggest you to visit the train station of important cities like Delhi/Mumbai /Chennai etc where you as a foreigner have a special allocation of berths/seats in some selected long distance fast trains.There is a separate counter for foreigners.Take your passport with you.

Hi, it means exactly what it mean. You are wait listed. If you keep checking your PNR status every few days, you will see your waitlist number come down. But, there is a chance you may not get the ticket. There is a TATKAAL option where you can get tickets on a train which is wait-listed for a premium. However, I suggest you watch your PNR status for a few weeks (since your train is after two months) and see what happens. Cheers

Ok, this sounds tome like 2 different things - wait-listed and RAC. My ticket says I am "RAC/Waitlisted" and that I am RLWL1. It is the 4866 Agra-varanasi sleeper. So, is it that I have a seat but not a definite berth? Or neither?
Does RLWL1 mean i'm 1st on the waitlist as opposed to WL200 where there are 200 waiting?
I didn't realise the whole waitlist thing til I'd booked and got e-ticket which then told me -yes, here is your booking BUT you are not confirmed etc, etc. Maybe I missed something....

yes, RLWL1 means you're 1st on the waitlist and since it's 2 months time.... you need not worry. It'll get confirmed. If the confirmation happens well before day of the journey, you'll get to know your coach/berth no. as well.
You are advised to check your PNR status from time to time to know about it.
