Hi Guys, I'm new to this site so just flicking around and working it all out!
Your trip sounds good, looks like you've planned to be down south for the Australian summer and up north as it moves into the Australian winter - which is good because the weather around Cairns in summer will be very humid and it's stinger season.
There are the normal must-dos on the east coast:
- Sydney and the Blue Mountains
- Byron Bay (surfing, relaaxed vibe)
- Fraser Island (lakes, 4x4 and camping)
- Whitsundays (Sailing, snorkelling and diving)
- Cairns and surrounds (Daintree forest, great barrier reef, atherton waterfalls)
If you have time I'd also look at:
- Great Ocean Rd
- Wilsons Promontory
- Jervis Bay
- Gold Coast/Surfers Paradise
- Bowen
- Mackay and Eungella NP
- Cape Tribulation
If you can, google the places aboce and check out where they are on the map, I've tried to list them south-north but the east coast is a big place
Not sure about your budget, I'd say transport and accomodation will be your two biggest costs.
