Any good tips for cheap traveling?

I'm about to go for a big journey around Europe. I'll start in the UK and go to the Czech Republic (Prague), Spain (Barcelona & Madrid) and then I intend to spend some time in Paris and Budapest..visiting all good buddies from Erasmus...

Going cheap....
Stay away from hotels with more than 1 star, always use budget airlines (steer clear of national carriers wherever possible) and always split flights if possible, check-out buses and advance train tickets on-line ,avoid taxis - they always take you to the same place for 20 times the price - normally, dont buy designer travelwear just to keep up with others and to be seen, if you're going to Paris, then check-out on (for example) Google or Yahoo!.... 'Paris on a shoestring/budget etc.' Read the real experiences of others, both good and bad, buy food from shops - not restaurants and get it late in the evening. That way you'll find 1/2 price bread, meat, fruit, veg etc.
Don't consider international rail passes (Eurail - Interail etc.) until you've looked at domestic fares first. Rail passes are very expensive and rarely work out to the travellers benefit long term.
Just a few tips to be going on with.

www.couchsurfing.com

enjoy!

Ive not tried couchsurfing.com but have heard good things about it.

Here are my tips though, take it or leave it.

www.orbitz.com, then compare to the actual carrier, or just google cheap flight from x to x and see what comes up
www.hostelworld.com, laterooms.com
I also prefer to travel overland, cheaper and you get to see more
you can try workaway.info
check wikitravel

visit cities but spend more time out of them. Its cheaper and more interesting
eat local food... but dont get sick! (dont eat from buffet style places in non western countries, perhaps stay away for street vendors also if you have a weak stomach)

I also think the trick is not to get too carried away with all the websites. There are many of them out there but alot of them are basically the same.

Happy travels!

Yes you get to see more - but certainly not cheaper, compared to budget airlines.

Lift sharing!! Its a winner!

Sadly, the original poster is working for the company that runs one of the two websites they mentioned in their original post, and they were just trying to promote that site. I've deleted the one they represent, blacklisted it for spamming, and am leaving the competing site up.

Other sites I'd recommend are and .

The Internet has made the world not only a smaller place but also easily accessible. This online hotel reservation that we found offers great hotels discount and we are taking off shortly!
