hey, a group of us where just there. We steyed at the loki hostel in cusco (i highloy recommend it), and about 2 doors down there was a company running tours. There are many of them in cusco but they all offer about the same things. We did 3days 2 nights whcih had a bike ride, hike, accom, food, entry to machu pichu and journeys to and from cusco to aguas calientes (the town near machu pichu) all for 99us each.
We walked in in the eveninbg and did the tour the day after (we spent 1 day to acclimatise).

This isn't usually possible for the classic inca trail which James is asking about (as per his links), although in December/January it just might be possible, as the wet season means there's far fewer people willing to hike through the rain for several days.

These I used myself when I did the inca trail. I can recommend them for the hike itself, which was perfectly organized, with a great guide and wonderful cook. Communication with their office was bad though (also heard this from fellow hikers) with emails frequently not being answered, and despite informing the office about my brother's food allergy three different times, the cook still had to be told separately, as he had no knowledge about this. (But once he did, he went out of his way to make the meals work.)
The reason we chose United Mice is that they had small groups, and leave earlier and hike further on the first day then any other group, and so you have the trail to yourself much more. If you go with them and have a small group of likeminded hikers, convince your guide to leave early on the second day as well, and be on top of Dead Woman's Pass before the next groups arrive.
In general, I can recommend to pick a tour company listed on , as those are the only ones who have licenses to hike the inca trail (any others will be passing you off to one of the companies on that list, charging you for it, where you'd be cheaper off just going with that other company directly), and then ideally one with a smilie and checkmark next to it.
(From other hikers on the trail and our guide, we heard favorable stories about Qente, Llama Path and Peru Treks. SAS was also very popular, but had huge groups.)

Thanks alot Guys. I ended up going with Inca point as they were the best in getting in contact quickly and answering questions (and they have their own license). I will let you know how they are once i have done it.
