I am currently a student at the University of Central Florida working on a group project for my Entertainment Marketing class. We have decided to create and market a water park and resort that would be located in the San Diego area themed around Peter Pan’s Neverland pirate adventures. The property would offer lodging and water park admission packages as well as water park admission only.
Personally, I think a San Diego waterpark would do well--despite the competition from Sea World, the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, and the San Diego Wild Animal Park, and nearby Mexico. It would probably do best if it were slightly away from the beach areas (maybe near Rancho Bernardo, or Spring Valley) in an area where it gets hotter than near the beach, but where is not too far away to drive to for the vast majority of San Diego residents or tourists).
I would expect some kind of pirate-themed water ride, plus maybe a "crocodile lagoon" area (or crocodile-themed ride), plus some kind of ride themed around Peter Pan or Tinker Bell that made you feel like you were riding through the air--but that was water related. At Schlitterbahn (in Texas) they have a "water roller-coaster"--and I think something similar to that would be the Peter Pan/Tinker Bell ride/water event.
You've probably seen the gigantic circular tubes they use at places like Seven Flags that go down "rapids". Maybe you use this as a "finding the Lost Boys" ride. The "giant slide" rides are famous nowadays. Maybe you use this as a theme ride for Hook's Crocodile Encounter--and have them go past crocodiles in an aquarium similar to what you would find at Atlantis in the Bahamas (where the slide goes through a shark tank).
The lazy river rides or wave-creation pools (similar to what they have at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas) are extremely popular nowadays.
In Maui, at the Grand Wailea, they have lots of interconnecting pools that spiral downward and are connected by short slides, or longer slides (from the top of the pool area). They also have what is referred to as a "water elevator"--see this youtube weblink for info:

They also have underwater bars built into this great waterpark right at the resort, which my wife and I particularly enjoyed when we were there.
Lastly, let me say that the thing I like to do best in San Diego right now is to rent waverunners or sailboats (or both) when I'm staying at the San Diego Hilton--and take them out on Mission Bay. Now I'm not looking to crowd out the current users--and too many waverunners on a bay is actually a way to drive tourists away--but if you could do something like this in moderation--or in a controlled area with safety and limited noise and pollution taken into consideration, then it would also be a very popular attraction.

I see where Disney no longer owns the US rights to the Peter Pan name or copyrights---and that these are now back in the public domain (although some UK copyrights are still active--and sometimes used to challenge use of the name Peter Pan (or release of new books or movies about Peter Pan in the US)
