NORTHERN LIGHTS FEB 2011 Advice needed

I really want to travel to see the northern light next year.

The north of Norway is beautiful this time of the year. The airline Norwegian (www.norwegian.no) flies Oslo - Tromsø in February for around 400 NOK/50 Euros each way. Oslo - Alta is around the same price. There is also an opportunity to go with the cruise ship Hurtigruten. This option is far more expensive and takes more time, but they say it is worth the money! Tromsø or Alta could be a good place to start if you want to see the northern lights. Tromsø is the biggest city in the north of Norway, but it seems like Alta is offering more of what you are interested in

In the area around Alta you can sleep in an ice hotel, and also go dog sledding, go fishing or go on a snow mobile safari. Take a look at these two links: http://www.visitnorway.com/uk/Articles/Theme/Where-to-stay/The-Alta-igloo-hotel/

There is also a famous ice hotel in Sweden (http://www.icehotel.com/). The closest airport would be in Kiruna. You can check out Norwegian airline also here, or www.sas.no. Here you can go dog sledding and also see the northern lights. I dont really know that much of this place, but I guess you will find something if you google it

Just a tip: the distances in this area are very big, so what seems like a couple of cm in the map, can take you a long time to go by car. Also travelling by car in this area is quite boring, there is not really a lot to see along the way :p

And remember that there is never any guarantee that you will see the northern lights! But dont hesitate going because of that - I guess staying in an ice hotel will be a once-in-a-lifetime-experience anyway! :p

Have a nice trip! =)
