HI! I live in Barcelona and have been here for a few years now. I would suggest you avoid the Ramblas area as it's just aimed at tourists who havent yet discovered the better places to eat at much more reasonable prices. If you want to try good tapas, i recommend wandering in el Gotico (to the left of the Ramblas as you face the sea), el tropezon is one of my favourites. Also, be aware of pickpockets. it shouldnt put you off but they are rife in most of the tourist areas but you just need some common sense - dont carry wallets in back pockets, keep an eye on your handbag at all times, have a copy of your passport and know the numbers to call if you have your cards stolen - it sounds like common sense but lots of people dont do it.
Montjuic is great for wandering in, check out Poble Espanyol, a recreated spanish village and the Caixa Forum, a free museum space usually with some great photography exhibitions.
There is loads to see, you will easily fill your 5 days!!

It's true, pickpockets are the one thing that ruins so many people's holidays in Barcelona! Be extra careful, in one instance, a guy came up pretending to play soccer around my friend and before he knew it BAM.. iphone stolen I would recommend taking an older phone around with you if you have it!
And another major tourist attraction (but one that's well worth visiting) is mount tibidabo! you can get a tram up to it and the view is amazing.. don't worry about not speaking spanish, neither did i hopefully the weather will be nice for your trip!

You will love Barcelona it is a beautiful city. Have you thought about staying around Gerona?
Gerona is quite an historical place and with it being so close to the coast of the Costa Brava, the view is spectacular. There are museums and Roman churches and monastries to visit and some fantastic food places. It is quite quiet around here so if you wanted to head out of Gerona for the day then maybe you could travel to the city centre for one day. It takes about an hour and a half on the train. Alternatively you can hop on a bus and then the Metro and explore the city.
As juicyjo says there is loads to see, but make sure you book in advance.

For food, avoid the Ramblas like the plague, there are many, many great restaurants and tapas bars in the Gothic, Ramblas and Borne areas. It is nice just to wander around the old city of Barcelona, looking in the little shops and whatnot.
There are many museums in the city that are well worth a visit, plus great architecture to look at.

I was in Barcelona few years ago and I was sleeping in one Hostel on Rambla street. It was great I felt that this city is leaving all the time and Rambla street maybe is touristic but is full of live. It depends of what are you looking for.
