Backpacking Malaysia

Hi
To answer your questions...
1. you may check out places like KL Sentral train station / Pudu bus station. I remember my British friend stored her big backpack in the locker in KL Sentral station. So you may want to check that out.

2. I would suggest 2 days for KL, Cameron Highlands, Penang, Langkawi respectively. Perhentian Island may be 3-4 days.

3. Public transportation in Malaysia is improving. Further the places you plan to go are hot spots for tourists, so there shouldn't be any problem. Langkawi is a little bit far from Kuala Lumpur, you might consider to buy cheap air tickets @ www.airasia.com.my or www.firefly.com.my to bring you there.

4. How about Melaka? The historical city which has been listed under UNESCO World Heritage Site is not really far from Kuala Lumpur (2 hours bus journey). Another interesting place you might want to consider would be Taman Negara.

Hope that helps!

Hi Meow,
I am a female & I have done solo backpacking in Malaysia and must say it is quite tourist friendly place.

1. As Hengman has suggested, both KL sentral & Pudu Raya bus station have locker facilities. I have availed at both the places. How long you want to keep your luggage there?

2. Include Malacca as well. It is not very far from KL. One night halt will suffice. You can read about it on my website too.
Perhentian Island may take more days. Rest all are for 2 days each unless you want to spend some more time in any of these place.

3. Public transport is good and I don't see any difficulty in navigating.

Happy travelling.

I would cut out Penang or Langkawi, or both, and spend some time in Taman Negara national park. It was my favourite part of the country - it's so great to experience the sights, sounds and smells of the jungle for a few days. I would also include Malacca for a day as it's an interesting place to visit. The Perhentian Islands are great and as Nisha says, you may want to spend longer there.

I used buses all over Malaysia and they were always reliable and punctual.

forget about penang and langkawi. nothing special to see.

Thank you all for your feedback, helped out alot.

I am also considering Taman Negara as well as Malacca to see where they can fit into our travels.

Thanks again.

Also,

Would anybody be able to help out, out of the places I have listed that we'll be visiting above, from what location would it be easier to get to Taman Negara?

As we are also pressed for time, what would you recommend doing there? I was thinking 2day/1night. Definately the boat tour and walking the canopy bridge. Anything else you would suggest?

Thanks again!!

I am going there in December again & will be travelling from KL by bus. Since you are tight on no. of days, 2D/1N is sufficient and the things you've mentioned are quite fulfilling.

Fantastic, thanks alot.

Do the buses leave regularly from KL and how much does it approximately cost, return?

Is there anything else you would highly recommend doing if we had more time there?

Yes, regular buses ply to Taman Negara. I am not sure about the cost but it'd be around RM 50 one way. You can take bus from Pudu Raya bus station (new name is Pudu Sentral).

Canopy walkway opens at 9:30 AM and you'd have to buy tickets. Only a limited number of people are allowed up at a time for safety reasons. So waiting is long if you go on a weekend.

Besides, canopy walk, and boat tour, you can opt for a night safari or a night walk.
The adventure activities on offer at Taman Negara include river rafting and fishing, a visit to the Orang Asli settlement (original inhabitants of the forest), visits to old caves, treks and hikes into the jungle. All this requires you to spend a minimum of three days.

Your resort / guesthouse will usually be able to make arrangements for these activities. Ideally, take a package from the resort that includes food and activities.

I hope it helps. :D
