Inca Trail

Planing on going to Peru solo in May 2012, i was wondering if you can do the inca trail solo or do you have to be part of a group?

I suppose you could do it "solo" by using some "alternate" routes but unless you're extremely experienced in hiking mountains and are able to care of yourself in case of confrontations I wouldn't recommend it.

If you want to go on the actual official trail though you will need to go as part of a group. The thing to keep in mind with the Inca trail is that you need a permit, and since these are limited, you need to get them ahead of time. The best advice I can give you is to look on the internet for groups organized out of Cuzco and book something as soon as possible. The official trail has many amazing ruins along the way that you will not get to see if you take some of the alternate routes.

The alternate route trips you can probably book when you get to Cuzco in any of the tour shops and they will put you in with a group of hikers.

Hope this helps

The official Inca Trail Trek can only be done with a licensed agency and must be booked at least 2 months ahead of time. You can check www.machupicchu.gob.pe for availability of spaces. The minimum is 2 persons. You can do the alternative treks to MP such as Salkantay, Lares, Huchuy Qosqo solo or with an agency and again 2 persons minimum. If you do it solo with an agency they will charge you a lot more.

thanx for the info, is there no way that i can sign up to an agent or tour operator and make up the number of an existing group? and will i need to buy a permit or will the operates purchase that on my behalf.

You need to contact the tour operators like www.trekperu.com www.waykitrek.net and more on www.saexplorers.org
They will give you dates which they have already formed groups and they purchase the permits, train tickets etc.

thanx for that i'll get on it

Hi,

You're not able to do the standard Inca Trail alone. It has to be done in a group, with a guide etc. As the trek is very popular I would get it booked up pretty soon to avoid problems with permit availability.

You are able to book the trail on the following link:-snip- There are also a number of alternative trails, should you want to venture slightly off the beaten track!

Have a fantastic time!
