I would suggest you start probably a month later say...Nov, the climate will be much better.
DO visit Dharamsala, which is close to palampur, try & chalk out route on Google maps.
Visit north of Delhi & travel south, try & visit Amritsar the Golden temple, then travel south via Bikaner in Rajesthan, I am not a fan of Jaipur, but would recommend, jodhpur & Jaiselmer.
If you want to experience the wild life, specially the striped tigers, best place is Bandhavgadh, which you could do when you visit Kolkata(western India). I can put you on to a jeep driver to take the necessary permits & take you inside the jungle.
Goa & south of India is best during winter months, I could help you locate good deals may be even join for part of the trip, Try & visit Hampi a UNESCO site & an ancient civilization.
I would prefer to take this route to do a part of north India.

Perfect to arrive Delhi it is already very pleasant here, and then take a tour of Rajasthan.
1.Delhi/Jaisalmer/Jodhpur/Udaipur/Jaipur/SawaiMadhour-Ranthambore/Agra/Jhansi - Orcha/Khajuraho/Jhansi/Varanasi/Delhi.
2.Delhi/Amritsar/Pathankot/Dharamshala/Mcloedganj/Palampur/Manali/Kulu/Shimla/Chandigarh/Dehradun/Haridwar/Rishikesh/Delhi.
3.To Mumbai and then South when its cooler.
You can book your tickets in advance. Also check out the site of Indian railways to know about Indrail Passes which are cheaper.
Else you can buy individual tickets. IRCTC has stopped the site for booking tickets check out cleartrip.com for rail tickets.
This apart there are many itineraries you can chose from.
