Hi,
While I haven't 'travelled' alone, I do live in China (I'm an Aussie) and spend a lot of time out and about on my own. When I have travelled to more remote parts of China, and stayed in hostels (admittedly with my kids and husband!) I have found meeting people just as easy here as in Europe or Australia!
I think like anywhere, being aware and exercising general caution is important but I wouldn't describe China as scary!! And there is so much to see and do, and I would be happy to give you more information about China specifically.
